What is a Sohodox DB?

The database that Sohodox uses to store information about documents that you have added is known as a Sohodox DB.

Do I have to create a Sohodox DB?

When you do a fresh installation of Sohodox, it installs a basic Sohodox DB (MS Access based). We highly recommend that you upgrade your SOHODOX DB to use a more advanced engine (MS SQL Server Express 2014). When you launch SOHODOX, it will provide you with simple instructions for this.

In case you need to create more DBs , you will need to purchase the ‘Sohodox Additional DB module’.

Does Sohodox support multiple DBs?

Prior to v11, Sohodox supported only a single DB.

Version 11 onwards SOHODOX allows you to create additional DBs. For this you will need to purchase the ‘Sohodox Additional DB module’.

Which databases are supported by Sohodox?

We recommend using Sohodox with MS SQL Server Express 2014. We provide an automated installer for this. Sohodox can also be configured to work with an existing installation of MS SQL Server Express 2008, 2012 and 2017. Prior to v11, Sohodox only worked with the Express Edition of MS SQL Server (and not the Standard and other editions).

Version 11 onwards SOHODOX supports SQL Server Standard. You will need to have an existing installation of SQL Standard or SQL Enterprise installed for this feature to work. If you do not have an existing installation of SQL Standard or SQL Enterprise , you will need to purchase this separately from Microsoft.

Support for SQL Server Standard or Enterprise based Sohodox DB is available as an optional paid module.

What is the file extension of a MS SQL Express based Sohodox DB?

A MS SQL Express based Sohodox DB has the .MDF and a .LDF extension.

Are the documents I add to a Sohodox DB, stored inside the Sohodox DB?

No the documents you add to a Sohodox DB are copied and stored in a normal Windows folder linked to that Sohodox DB. Only the references to the documents are stored in the Sohodox DB. This ensures that your documents are safe and available to you even if you stop using Sohodox. The folder in which a Sohodox DB's documents are stored is known as the File Store. Each Sohodox DB has it's own File Store folder. A single Sohodox DB can be linked to one or more File Stores.

Is there a limit to the amount of data the system can handle using MS SQL Server Express 2014?

Sohodox itself does not impose any limits. The only limits are those imposed by the database in use (e.g. MS SQL Express 2014) and your hardware (Processor, RAM etc.).

It is difficult to state the limits in terms of number of document types because it depends on the numbers and type of fields defined etc. For e.g. A MS SQL Express 2014 based Sohodox DB can be as large as 10 GB in size.

Please note that Sohodox does not store the added documents inside the database. Therefore the size of documents is not restricted by this. Sohodox only stores the indexing information about the documents in the database and even a 10 GB database would be able to store indexing information about a very large number of documents.
